Jamia Mosque Nairobi Hosts High-Level Halal Science and Innovation Workshop

Jamia Mosque Nairobi on Tuesday hosted a high-profile Halal Business Development and Export Readiness Workshop aimed at driving the growth of the halal industry across East Africa.
The workshop, held under the theme “Halal Science, Innovation and Industry,” attracted a distinguished diplomatic presence including H.E. Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle, Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya; H.E. Morakot Janemathukorn, Thailand’s Ambassador to Kenya; H.E. Ruzaimi Mohamad, Malaysia’s High Commissioner to Kenya; Dr. Akram Jamil Suleiman, Chargé d’Affaires of Iraq; and H.E. Dr. Khalid Mohammed Al Kathiri, Permanent Representative of the League of Arab States to the United Nations Offices in Nairobi.
The event, convened at the Jamia Multipurpose Hall, also brought together industry experts, entrepreneurs, Islamic scholars, and key stakeholders in the halal economy. It was jointly organized by the Royal Embassy of Thailand, the Halal Science Center of Chulalongkorn University, the Federal Republic of Somalia in Kenya, and Jamia Mosque Nairobi.
The workshop explored the role of halal science in fostering sustainable business practices, innovation, and regional cooperation. Discussions focused on building academic networks, transferring scientific expertise, and supporting local entrepreneurs to meet international halal standards.
A delegation from Chulalongkorn University’s Halal Science Center, led by its founder and advisor, Associate Prof. Dr. Winai Dahlan, participated in the sessions. Other members of the delegation included Dr. Pornpimon Mahamad, Director of the Center; Dr. Anat Denyingyot, Deputy Director; Dr. Najwa Yanya Santivorakul; and Dr. Sarawut Aree, Director of the Muslim Studies Center.
Topics under discussion ranged from the global halal economy and halal–haram principles to the application of science and technology in halal certification. Presentations also covered the HAL-Q system, halal blockchain, halal trade routes, and the evolving needs of modern Muslim societies.
Sheikh Muhammad Osman Warfa, Chairman of the Jamia Mosque Committee, welcomed the diplomatic delegations and expressed gratitude for the decision to host the workshop at Jamia Mosque.
“On behalf of the leadership of Jamia Mosque, I sincerely thank the ambassadors of Somalia and Thailand for choosing Jamia as the venue for this important gathering. This event has the potential to strengthen economic ties, empower Muslim businesses, and align commercial growth with halal values,” Sheikh Warfa said.
Ambassador Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle of Somalia described the forum as an important platform for advancing halal sustainable development in East Africa.
Thailand’s Ambassador Morakot Janemathukorn emphasized her country’s commitment to supporting halal innovation and forging stronger economic partnerships with the East African region.
Prof. Dahlan, in his presentation, described the workshop as an opportunity to facilitate the transfer of halal-related technologies, ensuring entrepreneurs in the region can leverage scientific innovations to expand their businesses.
Also present were Abdullatif Essajee, Deputy Chairman of the Jamia Mosque Committee; Secretary-General AbdulBari Hamid; Deputy Secretary-General Hussein Abdinassir; Treasurer Billow Kerrow; Deputy Treasurer Khider Farouk Adam; Imam Sheikh Jamaludin Osman; Jamia Majlis members; Sheikh Ibrahim Lethome; Dr. Ali Muhammad Salim; and Abdulhamid Slatch, among others.
