International Day Of Persons With Disabilities Highlights Need For Respect And Inclusion

Nominated Senator Crystal Asige has called for greater dignity and inclusivity for persons with disabilities in Kenya as the world observes the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. On December 3, 2025, Asige emphasized that true inclusion goes beyond policy and requires everyday respect and accessibility for all.

Earlier, during a media engagement on the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2025, she highlighted the importance of shifting societal mindsets, improving representation, and using accessible platforms to amplify the voices of persons with disabilities. The new Act strengthens disability rights by enforcing inclusion, accessibility, and anti-discrimination measures across education, employment, and public life. Key provisions include mandatory 5% representation of people with disabilities in public service, a restructured National Council for Persons with Disabilities, and stricter penalties for violations.

Asige’s message aligns with the theme of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.” According to the World Health Organization, more than 188 million people live with disabilities in the African region, yet many face stigma and barriers to healthcare, education, transport, and employment.

The senator’s call underscores the need for an inclusive Kenya where persons with disabilities are treated with dignity every day, not just on commemorative occasions.
