The discussions focused on three key areas: the deteriorating condition of Links Road, which falls under the management of the national government; longstanding safety concerns around the Likoni ferry crossing; and the poor state of Shimanzi Road, a critical artery for the movement of goods in and out of the port. The visit, which brought together top officials including Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Capt. William Ruto, Kenya Railways Managing Director Eng. Philip Mainga, and senior representatives from the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), was convened in direct response to Governor Nassir’s sustained advocacy on behalf of Mombasa residents. Governor Nassir, who has consistently raised concerns over the slow pace of interventions on these major infrastructure challenges, emphasized the need for swift and coordinated action to improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance service delivery for residents and businesses alike. “We are pleased to have reached a consensus on the urgent need to address these issues,” Governor Nassir said after the meeting. “By working together with the national government and key transport agencies, we are committed to delivering solutions that will improve the daily lives of the people of Mombasa.” The Cabinet Secretary echoed the Governor’s sentiments, noting that the national government remains committed to strengthening infrastructure in Mombasa as part of broader efforts to support economic growth and improve public safety. Links Road, which connects major residential and commercial zones, has suffered from years of neglect, resulting in congestion and increased road accidents. The Likoni ferry crossing, which serves tens of thousands of commuters daily, has faced recurring safety concerns, including vessel reliability and crowd management. Shimanzi Road, a crucial link to the port, has been heavily damaged by the constant movement of heavy trucks, impeding the flow of goods and affecting port operations. Governor Nassir’s administration has made infrastructure improvement a key priority, recognizing its vital role in driving economic activity, promoting tourism, and improving the quality of life for residents. The meeting concluded with a joint resolution to work collaboratively, with the national and county governments pledging to fast-track solutions and improve coordination in addressing Mombasa’s infrastructure needs. Residents have welcomed the move, expressing hope that the renewed cooperation between the two levels of government will bring long-awaited relief and transform the city’s transport landscape.
