By Urban Shihemi. June 3rd, 2025. The environment and lands court of Kenya at Kerugoya is set to rule on a land dispute between Jamia Mosque Kagio , Joseph Nduki  and Virginia Njogu. The land in dispute is a mosque land that was allocated to the muslim community in 1976 and the allotment letter issued in 1985. Currently the land hosts a mosque and a school in Kagio town in Kirinyaga county. According to a court notice seen by Horizon TV , the case has been set for mention on 30th June 2025 at the environment and lands court at Kerugoya. The mosque, which is a cornerstone of the Muslim community in the Mount Kenya region is one of Muslim institutions facing a wave of land disputes. A total of five mosques in Kirinyaga county  are currently entangled in legal disputes over land ownership, with cases pending in courts. Last week , The leadership representing the Muslim community in Kagio  appealed for intervention from President William Ruto and the anti-graft agency to safeguard the mosque’s land from potential land grabbers. The situation has been further complicated by an incident at Masjid Issa bin Maryam in Baricho, Kirinyaga West sub-county, where unknown individuals vandalized a section of the mosque, including windows, in an apparent attempt to seize the land. Muslim residents have accused an unnamed county executive member, driven by Islamophobia and vested interests, of orchestrating a sinister plan to grab the community’s land.
